Raymarine T-Series T400

The T-Series thermal night vision cameras from Raymarine is a high spec, easy to use set of devices that enables marine captains to navigate with absolute confidence and safety in total darkness.

There are two sets of T-Series devices – the T300 Series and the T400 series. In this review I’m going to go through the T400 series. Previously I went through the T300. The T400 as you’ll see is an enhancement on the (already excellent) T300.

The Raymarine T Series is equipped with image technology from Flir. And – in case you din’t know it – Flir Corporation is the ‘leading light’ when it comes to thermal night vision imaging technology. The Raymarine T400 is not to be taken lightly!

raymarine t400 seriesT400 thermal night vision camera is extremely flexible, it can be used as stand alone devices or it can be integrated with Raymarine navigation systems. I am not going to review the various Raymarine systems here for lack of time and space. But just to say that the T400 readily integates with the E-Series Widescreen or G-Series multifunction navigation systems, giving the user complete control over camera and viewing.

This powerful application gives one-touch access to thermal camera imagery alongside chartplotter, fishfinder, and radar navigation displays, making the convergence of night vision, radar, and GPS navigation a reality. T-Series thermal or lowlight images can be displayed either full-screen, or in a window alongside other navigation data. The integrated pan and tilt and zoom control which allows you to direct the camera towards radar and AIS targets, enhancing overall situational awareness.

T400 Series single sensor thermal camera come in two versions – standard resolution (QVGA) for high quality thermal images or really step up to high resolution (VGA) models for improved image detail and range performance.

Raymarine T400 – Multi-function Display Integration

As I have already pointed out, the T400 camera works seamlessly with the E-Series Widescreen Multifunction Navigation displays and the G-Series Command Center navigation system. Using SeaTalkhsnetworking, the camera’s pan, tilt and zoom controls can be actuated by touch screen (E-Series Widescreen) or using the MFD’s keypad and rotary controls (E-Series Widescreen or G-Series.) A convenient Thermal Imaging application is available right from the MFD’s home screen. The application can be displayed full-screen, or in a window alongside other navigation data like electronic charts or radar.

The camera system’s controls are available at any E-Series Widescreen or G-Series display on the boat, which gives captains the capability to navigate with thermal imagery from the main helm or a remote navigation station. The T400′s pan, tilt-and-zoom controls are also compatible with the E-Series Widescreen HybridTouch user interface.

Use the E-Series Widescreen’s touchscreen for effortless panning and tilting of the camera. Thanks to HybridTouch technology you can also control the camera with the track pad, rotary controller and soft keys when seas are rough.

Night Vision Thermal Imager AND Low Light Camera Too

This is what seperates the T300 from the T400 – in addition to its thermal imager, the T400 is also equipped with a high resolution ultra low light video camera too.  Available day or night, the video camera gives you a crystal clear view of objects around the boat.  The addition of the low light video camera gives you an advantage during twilight conditions, and in areas where some ambient light is available such as in marinas and harbor entrances.

Improved Safety With The T400

Thermal navigation cameras make boating at night safer with exceptional clear video display of unseen objects in the dark. The T400 camera makes identifying buoys, floating debris, rocks and other vessels easy. Using a thermal camera for navigation is pretty much as simple as watching TV!

Night time navigation is not always ideal. But thermal cameras give you the ability to see at night and navigate with total confidence, and making time on the water more enjoyable.

Daytime navigation is also enhanced with thermal technology – thermal cameras are not affected by the glare of sun, making finding buoys or objects obscured by the sun’s glare much more easy.

Thermal imaging especially shines in search-and-rescue and security applications for spotting man-overboard victims or unwanted visitors. Thermal imaging can help find persons in the water faster than any other night vision technology.

Superior FLIR Technology and High Resolution Optics In The T400

The Raymarine T400 Thermal Night Vision Camera System features a 320 x 240 pixel thermal imager with a 9Hz refresh rate. This gives the T400 great thermal detail, and a long detection range. The T400 uses the new FLIR Tau imaging core for best-in-class sensitivity and clarity.

And the T400 offers long range performance with 2x electronic zoom on the thermal imager. It also supports white-hot, black-hot, red-hot, and color imaging too.  By simply selecting the color options lets you optimize the image for best viewing under any lighting condition.

The T400 is contained in a compact, rugged – marine-grade – enclosure with total 360° pan and 90° tilt capability. Designed for seamless integration with Raymarine multifunction displays, the camera’s position and orientation can be controlled directly from the HybridTouch user interface of E-Series Widescreen multifunction display. The camera can also be controlled using the keyboard and track pad, or an optional remote Joystick Control Unit (JCU.)

The T400 is available at two resolutions: 320 x 240 pixels or 649 x 480 pixels. And available with a Joystick Control Unit or without.
